Weekly Update 7/9/2017

I feel as if I've moved into BC! Last Saturday was my scheduled afternoon to sit in the visitor center to answer questions and pass out maps.  Because July had 5 weekends, and because we have few volunteers, no one was supposed to be there on Sunday.  I had nothing else to do, and felt that the BHS should provide some coverage, so I went back on Sunday.  The BHS only has staff on site on weekends, but I also felt that there may be tourists or visitors on the holiday, so I was back on Tuesday for a while.  It was busy, so I'm glad I went.  The Board met on Thursday evening, so I attended that.  And then I gave my Second Sunday Tour this afternoon, as well as being in the visitor center in the morning as the scheduled volunteer was sick.  BHS is lucky to have a loyal volunteer like me!

Since this past week was a holiday, I actually did more than my usual sit-home-in-front-of-the-tv routine (although I did plenty of that watching the first week of Wimbledon).  On Monday, I went to the Savannah History Museum for the Loyalists and Liberty program, which is a walk-thru of the Battle of Savannah. I've seen it before, but it seemed like something interesting to do on Independence Day weekend.  Tuesday, I went to Colonial Park Cemetery for the annual DAR July Fourth celebration.  This year, the event included a very interesting talk about the flag, and the National Sojourners used a magnetic board to build a flag and tell about the meaning of all the parts.  I also was invited to a picnic at Sylvia and Charles house for the holiday.  I can't see the downtown fireworks from the condos, but that's not as interesting to me as the programs I attended.

On Thursday, I could strike something off my Summer Bucket List - I went to a Savannah Banana game.  Baseball is boring and not my favorite thing to do, but I try to get a game once a year.  I missed last year, and they didn't need me this year because all home games are sold out in advance.  I had tickets for a week or more, so I was able to get in. It was more fun watching the people in the stands and some of the antics on the field (for a couple of innings, the first base coach was a hip hop dancer, and he was really fun, and the maintenance crew dressed in banana costumes). The Bananas won 10-5, but I didn't stay until the end.

Once the 4th of July was over, I needed to get all the red, white and blue stuff out of my living room and back into boxes.  For the rest of the summer, I decorate with a beach themed decor - sea shells, star fish, that sort of thing.  So for my bathroom outhouse, I made a toilet paper roll mermaid.  I'm telling you - this outhouse thing is fun!

  2. I really like your outhouse crafting! You are very clever. I am sitting at McDonald's using their free WiFi - it is slow but I have eaten up most of my Verizon data for this month already and I want to add some albums to my FB on line journal of some of the fun places we have visited. Next week we will be up in Iowa, and then to MN.
