Weekly Update 01/30/2022

I can’t remember a playoff season with as many exciting games! Ever! The football was amazing again, and it was a shame that all the teams couldn’t win. Now we’re all set for the Super Bowl It will be the Old Man and the Newcomer. And on top of that, the tennis was unbelievable. Well, the men’s finals; the women’s finals was rather boring.

But other than sitting in front of my tv all week, I did next to nothing. Because it’s been so cold, I met the Green Square ladies at Whole Foods and we sat inside with coffee. As I went into the store, I noticed that they are already selling spring blooms. I couldn’t resist. Maybe spring will be here eventually.

Adrian is delightful. This week I got a photo of him riding on Ducky Doo. No one can remember if this was a toy when my grandfather was a tot, or if he made it for his own children. But it has to be a hundred years old. He growing very quickly!

Weekly Update 01/23/2022

Wow, what wonderful games this weekend! Every one was very exciting. Of course, the one win I wanted the most didn’t happen. But it was a great ride. And I really loved watching the cold in Green Bay, like last week’s weather in Buffalo. I’ve also been watching the Australian Open and it’s been nice seeing Jessica Pegula win her matches.

In other boring news:

Kay did not have to work on Monday, so I met her and two other friends for lunch. I hadn’t seen Beverly or Beth for a long time, and it was good to catch up with them again.

I had two zoom meetings this week. Davenport House invited docents to sign in for an update about the renovations. Things are moving along quite well, and the offices, admissions, and gift shop hope to move across the lane to the Kennedy Pharmacy sometime in February. Who know? Perhaps when I get back to giving tours, I will have to make major adjustments. I know it’s coming, and I’m not prepared, but I will have to adjust. I joined the Oglethorpe Library book club to share my opinions about A Paris Apartment. While I did not like the book at all, I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion. The librarian also made it very interesting as she had photos and information about the real apartment that provided the story.

I have not met my friends for Wednesday happy hour on Wilmington Island in many weeks. I don’t know if I’ll have a chance to get together with them again for many more weeks, depending on how things go at DH. I decided that this might be a good week to do that. It was nice to be with all those ladies again. Some were telling adventures of travels taken – Jan had been on a cruise where she and her husband got COVID, and Janet had visited family in Tennessee. Some just had stories about vaccinations and weather back up north where many are from. But it was just enjoyable to be there.

Thursday, my Green Square friends met at the Green Truck Restaurant. It was in the 70s that day, and we could eat our “grass-fed, all natural, hormone free, beef” burgers accompanied by produce from area farms on the patio outside. That was a wonderful treat to be in the sunshine. When I told my friends about the white fake ficus I wanted to buy, they convinced me that I needed it. I stopped to buy it on my way back home. I don’t need more STUFF, but this really is lovely.

The good weather didn’t last. On Friday I went downtown because I wanted to do a little research in the Georgia Historical Research Center that just opened this week after being closed for renovations for almost three years. Driving into the city, it was cloudy and gray, just like every day all winter in Rochester. Saturday, I turned on the heat in my apartment. I try to keep it off as much as I can, as I’m usually not so uncomfortable that I can’t just put on a sweater or cover myself with a throw. Even I was uncomfortable when it was 64 inside.

Adrian is wonderful. A photo was posted of him this week at daycare, working on an art project. He’s six months old! Maybe the craft gene has been inherited from great grannie.

Weekly Update 01/16/2022

Because I didn’t do anything on Monday, I had a lot of errands to get done on Tuesday. I began at City Hall, where I spent a few hours reading through old magazines and making notes of anything involving Savannah. I stopped at the library to pick up a few books to read to Adrian when we zoomed. The children’s librarian helped me, and I also found a couple on my own that I thought might be ok. I had to go to Publix to do a bit of grocery shopping, but not too much. And I went to pick up a prescription at the Walmart (which was not ready), but I got a flu shot as long as I was there.

While I was out, I continued my quest to find something to hang on the front door now that the poinsettia wreath is packed away in storage. I had hoped to find something on sale, but all the holiday decorations were to Christmas-y. I was looking for something that would be a snowman, or sled, or something like that. No luck. My last stop was At Home. I didn’t find exactly what I wanted, but I did find a small fake green wreath and a few white ornaments. I got creative, and made something. It only cost me $4, so how bad can it be?

I’d been feeling very very tired lately. I didn’t have a sore throat, cough, headache or sniffle, but something wasn’t just right. There is a COVID testing site about three miles from me, so on the way back home from Green Square on Thursday, I thought I’d give it a chance. It would have been easy if I’d filled the forms out correctly the first time, or if I could read the signs that say One Way, and didn’t have to drive all the way around again. Even with all that, I was done in less than twenty minutes. I was notified very early Sunday morning (they must be working 24/7) that my test showed negative evidence of COVID. I was glad to know that, as now I can feel that I’m not inadvertently making anyone else sick.

Saturday morning I had my first Zoom meeting with Adrian. What a delight! I read the books I’d borrowed from the library, while he sat on Sarah’s lap and (kinda) listened. When I suggested this to Sarah and Jack, I said I would like Adrian to be able to recognize my voice and face, but I knew that I was not going to have a conversation with a baby. Reading books seemed like a good compromise. It only lasted for about 15 minutes, but I loved it! I hope to do that again.

And then there’s the Buffalo Bills! What can I say! What a game! I actually was hoping for something a little more exciting than it was, but I will not complain. How can a team play so well on both sides of the ball in a game against a traditional rival in the playoffs, yet lose to the hapless Jags in the regular season? I wonder which team will show up next week. I knew it was cold because you could see the breath as the players were on the field. No snow, but I still liked seeing what I’m missing. Brrr

Is tomorrow a holiday? I can’t remember.

Weekly Update 1/9/2022

Not a lot going on again this week.

I packed away all the nutcrackers for another year. They always delight me as I remember good times and good friends. But, putting them in storage, and then getting them out again is a wonderful way to be reminded each year.

I attended book club at TLC. This is the British Mystery Writers Book Club, and we read Martha Grimes Stargazey. It was ok, but since it was the first Richard Jury book I’d read, and it toward the end of the series, I missed a lot by not knowing some of the background of the characters. I didn’t like the book well enough to want to read others in the series, either. But I did enjoy hearing what the others had to say. Most had read nearly all of the series.

I also dialed into a Friends of Mt Hope zoom lecture. It was a fascinating true story of riots in Rochester following the assault of a 10-year-old German girls by an African American man in 1872.

The speaker had a vast knowledge of the event as well as insights into the way Rochester was at that time. There was also some mention of North Landing Road and the Dugway, where I grew up, and made me want to find out more. My internet search skills are not well developed, and I couldn’t find a lot. I did find some interesting articles by the Brighton town historian about the African American community in that area. The talk was well worth attending.

The Bills won, but it wasn’t pretty. They should have crushed the Jets, and the final score did not show how close the game really was. I have little faith that Buffalo will get very far into the playoffs. But at least they are ahead of New England.

Adrian continues to be perfect in every way. He is six months old now, and that’s so hard to believe.

Weekly Update 1/2/2022

And so, another new year begins. The issues that I’d faced for the past few weeks have all been resolved, but not without more headaches and frustrations. But it’s in the past now, so I can go forward.

I did not go out on New Year’s Eve; I’m too old for that. And I have a lot of memories of New Year’s Eves from long ago. Some of those would be hard to beat, and some I’m glad I don’t have to re-live. As I may have mentioned before, holidays are not a big deal for me, but just another day. I did go out with friends to a very nice restaurant on New Year’s Day, I enjoyed being with friends. I also went out to breakfast with Kay Sunday morning.

For all my records from 2021, I was able to print them and/or save them to a stick. I filed away old financial paperwork, and cleaned the desk to be ready for another year. I created new folders on my laptop for the coming year. I hope I’m prepared, but who knows.

I made myself a calendar to keep track of birthdays and holidays. I’ve done that for several years. But it is not nearly as wonderful as the amazing calendar I received from Adrian. What a great surprise to receive that!

The Bills beat the Falcons. But, if Matt Ryan hadn’t been an idiot, it would have been a lot closer. Since Atlanta is “regional coverage”, and since my tv is now connected to cable once again, and not the horrible streaming experience I’ve had lately, I was able to watch the game. That was a treat for me, and made me realize that, although I may pay a lot for the service, I appreciate having the channels I want.

With temperatures in the 80s this week, and watching the game in Buffalo with snow on the ground, I was again reminded why I'm glad I moved to the South.
