Weekly Update 9/25/2022

This was a busy week for me, unlike almost all other weeks.

Monday I started out by getting my booster shot. The Senior Citizens organization that I belong to was offering the shots. I‘d made an appointment, and I went to have that done in the morning. I had recorded the Queen’s funeral, and watched that when I got home. Then Barbara came for a visit.

Barbara was here until Friday. She used to live at MP near me, but moved to the mountains of North Georgia about the same time I moved to the apartment. Because she knows many of the same people I do, we visited a lot. I also had a few meetings and I did my DH tours. We also met Kay for dinner one night, saw June for lunch and to play some Rummikub, and visited with the Green Square ladies at Whole Foods with our pumpkin spice lattes. It was nice to have her here.

I also had a library book club meeting that I attended while she was at an appointment. The book was We Are Not Like Them. I didn’t really like the book very much, but others enjoyed it. I like when there’s a discussion of differing opinions. There was a lecture on Thursday that I had already signed up for, so I went to that. Jeff Freeman, the Assistant Director at DH, gave a talk about the Davenports in Civil War. I knew most of what he talked about, but still thought it was fascinating.

Saturday, I got up really early and went to Lake Mayer for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer's. I’ve walked in the past, but I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do that this year. It worked out that I could get there. It was a lovely morning – bright sunshine, neither too hot nor too cold. I’m glad I went.

I’m not as glad that I drove to Bluffton to the R Bar to watch the game Sunday afternoon. Mistakes were made, lots and lots of mistakes. At least I got a great Beef on Wick sandwich, so it wasn’t a completely wasted afternoon.

Weekly Update 9/18/2022

This will give you an idea of what an idiot I am: Last Sunday, when I went out with Kay, one of my hearing aids wasn’t working. I thought that maybe I hadn’t placed it in the charger correctly, and that the battery was dead, but Monday morning, it still wasn’t working. I was ready to go to the Beltone shop to have it looked at, when I decided that maybe I should try to work with it myself. I got out the tiny brush, and sure enough, all it needed was to be cleaned. I’m glad I didn’t embarrass myself by having the professionals look at it! Monday was also the day my house cleaner came, so I told her that story. She now knows what she’d dealing with as far as keeping things clean here go.

I gave tours at Davenport on Wednesday morning. The first people in the door were wearing Buffalo Bills hats and shirts! I couldn’t let that go, so I went right up to them and started to recap last week’s game. We chatted about what a great season we think this could be. That was fun. There aren’t a lot of Bills fans in the South.

Thursday I had errands to do. I got the oil changed on my car, and I got my haircut. For TNF, I didn’t watch the game. I would have, but I don’t have Amazon Prime, and I don’t want to pay for another tv streaming service when I pay Comcast a million dollars for all the sports channels they have. It makes me rather angry that I pay for sports, and yet the NFL is so greedy, trying to get more money for broadcast rights, and Amazon is so greedy thinking people who don’t have Prime will pay for it just to watch football. I’m very lucky that I have enough money to do or buy anything I really want, but this is my line in the sand, I guess.

Friday was a very busy day. I left the apartment at 9 am and didn’t get back until 5. It was just like having a job! I met Helen and Jane at Whole Foods for coffee and chit chat. Then I went to The Learning Center because my friend, John, was having a display of his art in the gallery there. The opening was Friday, and I wanted to be there for him and to see his work. I went downtown because it was Constitution Day, and the copy of the constitution that is owned by the Georgia Historical Society was on display. Of the only three copies in existence, one is owned by GHS. It’s not available to be viewed frequently, so I wanted to see it. There was also a drum from the Revolutionary War, and the dueling pistols from the Button Gwinnett / Lachlan McIntosh duel, where Gwinnett was fatally wounded. Of course I would want to visit that! Then I met Vicki, Larry and Patsy, and others for lunch. They were in the city to finalize the adoption of Patsy, after seven long years of waiting. It was a great day for them. But I was exhausted.

So, Saturday, I stayed home and did nothing but watch college football. Sunday, I met Kay for breakfast, and then stayed home and watched the NFL.

Weekly Update 9/11/2022

When was the last time you saw this?  Gas for less than $3 a gallon!  And, as I complained a week ago, the Parkers right down the street was selling gas for $3.39. It makes no sense.

I signed a new lease on the apartment. I’ll be here for another year. The rent didn’t increase too much, either. I was expecting a big jump and I was surprised, but not disappointed.

Wednesday was DH, and then I went back in the evening for a CMA kickoff there. Part of the evening program was a tour of the raised basement level, where the construction continues to reinterpret it as it may have looked in the 1820s (but we still need electricity for lighting and a/c for the entire building, so it won’t be EXACTLY accurate). It was my first time in that part of the building since the offices, gift shop, and admissions moved, so I was very interested.

In honor of the start of the NFL season, I made a HUGE pot of chili on Thursday. I ate some before the game, and then divided the rest up to freeze. I’m going to have enough chili for the whole season.

The Bills looked great!  They lost a little focus in the second quarter, but were back on track for the second half. I must admit I was a little worried - playing the reigning Super Bowl champions on the road for the season opener.  But they looked really, really good, both on offense and defense.

The college football games were also big wins, both UGA and SU.  Another great win was Georgia Southern over Nebraska.  For the tennis, I was excited that Francis Tiafoe was able to get as deep into the tournament as he did, and he played amazing well in all his matches, even the loss.  The women were interesting, too. It’s going to be a long time before there’s any more tennis on tv for me to watch.

RIP Queen Elizabeth. At age 96, her death was not a surprise, although I was beginning to think she’d live forever. I was only 5 years old when she became Queen, and she’s the only British monarch I’ve ever known. It seems very strange to read news now about the King. I’m re-watching episodes of The Crown, especially the early ones when she first became Queen. A long, dignified life ends, and I hope she is at peace. (This is a craft that was made years ago, before Dave and Lisa moved to Wales.  From time to time, Dave would challenge us to make a craft and this was from one of those times. It's moved with me for three times, and I still have it.)

Weekly Update 9/4/2022

On Wednesday, I met the happy hour group at Mollys on Wilmington Island. I’m not able to get there often, but I knew I wouldn’t make it next week.  Jan, my friend, is going on an around the world cruise soon, and I wanted to see her before she left.

Davenport House reopened on September 1!  And I was there to give one of the first tours!  It felt good to be back. I remembered everything as if it had been three days since my last tour, not three months. The tours were small and I’m not sure if tourists are aware that we are open again. But September and October are busy months in Savannah, and I expect we will be busy. I have missed it!

On Saturday, one of the Wednesday group and I went on a narrated trolley tour of Savannah that focused on the Salzbrugers. I’d taken the tour a year ago, but this one was just a little bit different. Joyce is a descendant of the Salzburgers, but had never taken the tour. When we were talking a few weeks ago, I mentioned it, and she suggested that we could do it together. The Salzburger Emigrants were a group of German-speaking Protestant refugees from the Catholic Archbishopric of Salzburg (now in present-day Austria) that immigrated to the Georgia Colony in 1734 to escape religious persecution. On October 31, 1731, an Edict of Expulsion demanded that the Salzburg Protestants recant their faith or leave. King George II of Great Britain offered them refuge in his Georgia colony, which later became the town of Ebenezer, about 25 northwest of savannah. The first Salzburgers landed in Savannah, after two months crossing the Atlantic Ocean on March 12th, 1734. Some of the interesting landmarks in downtown Savannah are the Salzburger monument in Emmett Park, and the German fountain in Orleans Square. It was very interesting.

Sports!  I watched a lot of tennis of course. I was happy that Serena had two wins, but now that is over. I was watching every point. UGA and SU had big opening day wins. Now my focus is on Thursday night. Go Bills!
