Weekly Update 9/17/2023

I’m waiting for Kay to come pick me up to go to the airport. We go first to Charlotte, and then have an overnight flight to Heathrow. This will be the final update for a few weeks.

Monday I was invited to a farewell party for a friend. Heidi is moving to be closer to one of her children. The gathering was at one of the new condos in the East End. It was lovely – a four story unit with views of the river. A huge container ship went by as we were watching out the windows. I knew about half the people there, so I was able to socialize the best I could. But, then I had to go home and watch that game. Really? They lost to the Jets? NY lost their star QB on the first series of downs, and the Bills can’t take advantage of that? It’s gonna be a long season.

Tuesday, after I was finished at CH, I ran a few errands. I had a few more things to get for the adventure to Wales (I also had to go out again on Friday to get a few more things). I went to Verizon, to ask about international access. The customer service rep said I’d have to call to have those questions answered. So I called when I got home. Imagine this – no one picked up, and after entering number after number, I was directed to go to the website and find an answer there. So, I did that. At first they sent me to Just Answer, but I’m not going to pay a third party for a question that Verizon should be able answer for all the money I sent them each month. No one on the Verizon site was available to “chat”, and the answers I found in FAQs were all about spending more money. Like $100 for 10 days. That’s not going to happen. I’m confused because I can talk and text to Lisa and Dave from the US to Wales without charges all the time. But if I’m in the same country with them, it’ll cost me $10 a day for some of the time I’m there? NO! I may not be able to view or respond to texts for the next two weeks, but at least I’ve saved a little money.

I had two days of training at GM this week, and I did tours at DH one day. Driving home from one of these meetings, I decided to see how the Houlihan bridge reconstruction was progressing. The answer is its moving slowly, but at least something is changing, unlike the courthouses downtown that have blocked traffic for years and nothing is being worked on. As long as I was out that way, I drove through the wildlife preserve. I saw only one alligator, and I would have missed that if another car hadn’t pulled over and the occupants were pointing. That’s getting to be a pretty boring drive.

Adrian and Annie are delightful. They went to a farm this week, and played in the corn barn and had photos taken with pumpkins. They did some crafts, which were really fun to see. They are growing too quickly!

Weekly Update 9/10/2023

SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS!

A great week for watching tennis and football. The women’s tennis finals is what tennis should be. Talented and athletic performers, pushing each other to make unbelievable shots. It’s too bad they both couldn’t win. The men’s, on the other hand, was boring and lackluster. A straight sets win for Djokovic, without ever really being challenged. For the college football games, what’s going on at Colorado? UGA, SU and Georgia Southern all had good wins again this week. There were some exciting NFL games, too. And, how about those Detroit Lions? I don’t think they won the game as much as the Chiefs lost it, but it’s still a win. I was happy about most of the outcomes of Sunday games, but I’ll have to wait until the Bills play tomorrow night to know if Week 1 was a success.

Monday this week was Labor Day. I’m sure that’s a nice holiday for those still in the work force, but it’s just another day for me. I did drive to Ebenezer to the Salzburger Heritage Days festival. When I went last year with Jane and Helen, we were very disappointed. This year was better, and the museums and building were mostly open. I even spent about 10 minutes at the church service, just to be able to get into the historic church building.

I had training at both DH and GM on Wednesday. Interesting, but I think I’m leaning toward ending my DH days and moving to only doing GM. I still haven’t made a final decision, but a few changes being made at DH are not the direction I am comfortable with.

On Saturday, I took a small end table that’s been collecting dust in my garage to the YMCA community garage sale. The group that I knit with was trying to raise funds to purchase more yarn. And this is the reason why I can’t go to yard sales:

Weekly Update 9/3/2023

I had training at Green Meldrim House on Monday. It was fine when I went in, but it just started to sprinkle when I was coming out. It rained harder as I was walking to my car. I said to a homeless man who was trying to seek shelter under a tree, “I didn’t think we were going to get this until Wednesday!” I got soaked! And then on Wednesday, after we’d endured several days of dire warnings, there was nothing! Everything closed down for the hurricane – schools, shops, government (of course), museums. Here’s what I saw each time I went out on my porch to monitor the storm:

8 am – sprinkling, a little wind

10 am – same

noon – same

2 pm – same

4 pm – wind picking up, skies getting dark

6 pm – drizzling, light wind

8 pm – rain stopped, very calm

Thanks to all who texted or contacted me to see if I was ok. I was fine. To be fair, I have to report that closer to the ocean, they didn’t have it as easy. Some on the islands lost power, and a few trees were uprooted. But, that was it. All hurricanes should be so easy.

I didn’t do much all week. Wednesday was a wasted day, as I was forced to stay in and watch tv. Thursday I did tours at DH, but there were almost no visitors, and it was boring. On Friday, I met the Green Square ladies, then had training at Green-Meldrim in the afternoon, and finally, I met the Happy Hour friends later in the day. To fill in the time between having to be at one place or another, I took a walk at Lake Mayer - haven’t done that in a long time! I also went to the Jepson Museum to see the exhibit on medieval armor. I’d been meaning to go there, but there never seems to be a good time. Friday was it. It was quite interesting, and I’m glad I finally saw it.

Sonny Seiler died this week. Some people remember him as Uga’s owner and keeper. Others might remember that he was Jim Williams’ lawyer in the murder cases. And he also played the role of the judge in the movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I will remember him from the times I served on the Board at BHS with him. He had a delightful sense of humor. He always liked my little VW ‘vert. He will be missed.

Adrian and Annie are growing so quickly! And getting cuter all the time!
