Weekly Update 11/25/2018

I had many kind offers to join friends for thanksgiving, but declined them all in order to stay home, eat deli turkey, and watch the football games. If I’d known how terrible the games were going to be, I may have decided to go out, but I had hopes of some good sports watching. It was not to be. But I also had a chance to get the condo ready for Christmas as I won’t have much time to do that next week.

On Friday, I was up early to drive to Kay’s house. I left my car there and she drove to St Augustine where we met Lisa and Dave. The Besties together again! The Augustine Inn was ok, but Kay and I had to share a bed, and the large jacuzzi tub took up most of the room. We weren’t in the room too much, and other parts of the b&b were wonderful - it was close to everything so we didn’t need to get in the car all weekend, the courtyard was private and comfortable so we enjoyed fresh baked chocolate chip cookies and champagne every afternoon as well as bottles of wine and laughter in the evenings, and the breakfasts were great. We took the trolley tour and that was a wonderful way to see and learn a lot of the city history. We didn’t do many museums, but did get to the Castillo. Connie and Jim drove down on Saturday, so we all went out for drinks and dinner that evening. The time flew by, and I can’t believe it’ll a long time before we can see Lisa and Dave again.

Driving home on Sunday afternoon I had to “watch” the game on my NFL app on the phone. It would have been a great game to watch. But, when it comes down to it, I would rather be with Lisa, Dave and Kay than at Coach’s watching a game any day!

And, while my new addition to my collection is not technically a nutcracker (it’s a bobblehead), I do have something new this year. It’s Harry Kane, the Tottenham Hotspur star. He came all the way from UK!

and quite a collection it is!

Weekly Update 11/18/2018

Last week I had almost nothing to write. And that made this week look like a whirl wind of activity. I didn’t even go to The 90 ON Friday night, so that’s an indication of how little I did all week.

Sunday, however, I was invited to Barbara's condo for a pre-Thanksgiving Day holiday feast. That was delightful. As always, I offered to bring wine, so I wouldn’t have to cook anything, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have enough to eat!

there was plenty of really good food

I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

Weekly Update 11/11/2018

This week was not as busy. Not at all. I went to only three lectures (and I skipped one when I just couldn’t get out the door).

One thing I did do, and I enjoyed, is the St John’s Holiday Bazaar. I try to get there every year. They serve the most incredible chili for lunch. I think that all the church ladies make a pot of chili, and then all of that is dumped into one big pot. It is delicious. The church ladies also bake marvelous desserts, but I couldn’t even go near that table – I would want to buy everything. They also have a white elephant sale. I found so many things that I needed – a reusable gingerbread house made of plastic (you coat it with frosting, add your candy, use it for display, then wash everything off and pack it away until next year. What a great idea! But, my Gingerbread House days are far behind me now), lots of books, a great Corningware dish with lid that would be perfect for the soup I eat all the time, a small Christmas pillow (it helps my back if I use a pillow when sitting in my recliner), a cookie jar that would would compliment the ones I have in my kitchen now when my nutcrackers aren’t out. But I came away with only a small teapot and a bracelet. I don’t need any more stuff!

And on Friday, after DH and The 90, I went to a play that Charles Snyder’s theater group did. It was a reading of parts of 4 Neil Simon plays. It was very entertaining, and I liked it very much. It’s at the church on Wilmington Island, and those church ladies always make cookies for before the performances. Unlike the bazaar, my resistance wasn’t high, and I gobbled a few of those up.

The weather has turned cooler now, and the tours at BC were very crowded. In fact, I was asked to give a tour on Saturday in addition to my usual Sunday tour. I guess if locals and tourists can’t get to the beach, they need a different diversion, and BC can be it.

So, since I did so little,I have no pictures this week. Barbara and I went out to lunch at a Cuban restaurant, and I got a Cuban latte, which was very good. This is the only photo of the week:

Both the Spurs and the Bills won this week. What's not to like about that?

Weekly Update 11/4/2018

This was a busy, busy week. I attended two lectures, one SCAD movie fest showing, two concerts, one book club, the BHS annual dinner meeting, and trick and treats!

The lectures were: one with the Savannah Historical Society about the strange life and death of Edgar Allen Poe, and one at TLC by Dr Robin Williams. Both were interesting, but I’d have to say I like Dr Williams’ talk better. He spoke about Savannah being referred to as a historic city, when he believes it is an “innovative” city. An interesting thought, but I don’t know if I’d agree to change the name.

I’ve never been to the SCAD film fest, and always thought it might be interesting. It’s two weeks of movies (mostly independent) shown throughout the day and evening. It also includes awards and honors. This year, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Maggie Gyllenhall, and Hugh Jackman were in town to accept awards. I wasn’t involved in anything that exciting, but I did get to the Trustees Theater early one morning to see two films. One was a short film, Jitters, about a man’s last minute apprehension before getting married. The other was a full length film, Tomorrow, about healing: a paralyzed veteran, a family torn apart loss and regret, and women finding their voices by loving these damaged men. I really need to see a Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon, not anything this deep, but I did enjoy watching.

The concerts were great. On Monday night, because I really didn’t want to watch the MNF game, I met a few friends at Kevin Barry’s to listen to Harry O’Donoghue sing. He is occasionally there, and when he does play, I like to go listen to him. He’s very entertaining. Not only does he have a wonderful voice and a wide range of Irish folksongs, he’s also a very funny comedian. On Friday, I went to the always grand Tybee Post Theater to see a live performance of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

The book club was at TLC. We discussed What the Qur’an Meant and Why it Matters by Garry Willis. I didn’t like the book, and others felt the same. But, hey, it wasn’t the usual chick book we read at the library book club. I feel as if I almost used my brain a little to get through this read.

For the Bonaventure Historical Annual meeting, we had a nice dinner and conducted the annual business, with reports, votes, and a speaker. All the Board members had to introduce themselves and give a short synopsis of the duties. One is the secretary, one is the treasurer, one is the newest member. I just stood up and told them that I do whatever they tell me to do.

And then there was that Trick and Treat thing. I didn’t get any kids to my condo again this year, so I have a few packages of cookies I’ll need to get rid of. Last year, when I stumbled upon a Wilma Flintstone costume, I thought it would be great fun. The closer it got to October 31, the less funny it seemed. But I did get dressed up. I went to a few places; everyone thought it was a hoot. But I’m not going to do that again.

Since the weather turned cooler, I haven’t been going to the pool. I have, however, tried to walk almost every day. Well, that’s going to end, and here’s why:

Georgia has “early voting”. The lines of cars parked at the library across the street were very long every day. Everybody ready for the election to be over? I sure am!
