Weekly Update 11/4/2018

This was a busy, busy week. I attended two lectures, one SCAD movie fest showing, two concerts, one book club, the BHS annual dinner meeting, and trick and treats!

The lectures were: one with the Savannah Historical Society about the strange life and death of Edgar Allen Poe, and one at TLC by Dr Robin Williams. Both were interesting, but I’d have to say I like Dr Williams’ talk better. He spoke about Savannah being referred to as a historic city, when he believes it is an “innovative” city. An interesting thought, but I don’t know if I’d agree to change the name.

I’ve never been to the SCAD film fest, and always thought it might be interesting. It’s two weeks of movies (mostly independent) shown throughout the day and evening. It also includes awards and honors. This year, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Maggie Gyllenhall, and Hugh Jackman were in town to accept awards. I wasn’t involved in anything that exciting, but I did get to the Trustees Theater early one morning to see two films. One was a short film, Jitters, about a man’s last minute apprehension before getting married. The other was a full length film, Tomorrow, about healing: a paralyzed veteran, a family torn apart loss and regret, and women finding their voices by loving these damaged men. I really need to see a Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon, not anything this deep, but I did enjoy watching.

The concerts were great. On Monday night, because I really didn’t want to watch the MNF game, I met a few friends at Kevin Barry’s to listen to Harry O’Donoghue sing. He is occasionally there, and when he does play, I like to go listen to him. He’s very entertaining. Not only does he have a wonderful voice and a wide range of Irish folksongs, he’s also a very funny comedian. On Friday, I went to the always grand Tybee Post Theater to see a live performance of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

The book club was at TLC. We discussed What the Qur’an Meant and Why it Matters by Garry Willis. I didn’t like the book, and others felt the same. But, hey, it wasn’t the usual chick book we read at the library book club. I feel as if I almost used my brain a little to get through this read.

For the Bonaventure Historical Annual meeting, we had a nice dinner and conducted the annual business, with reports, votes, and a speaker. All the Board members had to introduce themselves and give a short synopsis of the duties. One is the secretary, one is the treasurer, one is the newest member. I just stood up and told them that I do whatever they tell me to do.

And then there was that Trick and Treat thing. I didn’t get any kids to my condo again this year, so I have a few packages of cookies I’ll need to get rid of. Last year, when I stumbled upon a Wilma Flintstone costume, I thought it would be great fun. The closer it got to October 31, the less funny it seemed. But I did get dressed up. I went to a few places; everyone thought it was a hoot. But I’m not going to do that again.

Since the weather turned cooler, I haven’t been going to the pool. I have, however, tried to walk almost every day. Well, that’s going to end, and here’s why:

Georgia has “early voting”. The lines of cars parked at the library across the street were very long every day. Everybody ready for the election to be over? I sure am!

  1. I really like your Wilma costume but I think I will skip that book you read. I am mostly reading mysteries right now, but for our monthly book club we are going to discuss Where the Crawdads Sing - I haven't started it yet, but I will have hours and hours to read while Fred drives back to AL.
