Weekly Update 1/27/2019

Monday was game day. Not only was my regular Rummikub game with Barbara and June switched to Monday from Wednesday, but I also played Mexican train with Heidi, Donna and Judy in the afternoon. I’d never played Mexican train before (it's a variation on dominoes), but I enjoyed it. I don’t know if this will be a regular thing or not, but it was fun.

I went to see On the Basis of Sex, the movie of the first court case argued by Ruth Bader Ginsberg. It was WONDERFUL. Of course, I’m a fan anyway (and also of Armie Hammer), but I really enjoyed the movie. She was wonderful, but she was also surrounded by wonderful people – her husband (encouraged her and was a terrific support, Charles Moritz, (her defendant, who saw the bigger picture of discrimination and did not grab a financial settlement when offered), activist Dorothy Kenyon, and the ACLU - finally. There were also roadblocks, at Harvard and in the courts, but that’s how it was at the time. And, thanks in part to her, it no longer is like that. I also thought the costumes were spot on – I remember wearing those clothes, and having that hairstyle!

I had a chance to attend a lecture at TLC on Wednesday that was given by Sylvia’s husband, Charles. He spoke about Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. Being overshadowed by his larger-than-life father, I really never knew anything about Jr. This was very enjoyable, and interesting. This was the first time Charles has given a lecture at TLC, but I hope it won’t be his last.

With no football, I hardly knew what do to with myself. Luckily, there was the tennis. The Women’s Finals was great tennis; the Men’s finals, not so much. But now that that’s finished, how will I fill my time? I guess I’ll have to read more.

Sunday, Barbara and I went to the SCT performance of Annie. It was wonderful, as always. And because Barbara substitute teaches at a local school, she knew one of the kids in the chorus line.

and one final thing:  2006 and 2019

Weekly Update 1/20/2019

I did nothing this week. Not one thing! In my defense, it was because I had been called for jury duty starting Monday, so I was unable to schedule to do anything, thinking I might have to serve. That never worked out, but each day began with a threat that I may have to report.

So one thing I did, was read. I finished the incredibly long, and sometimes boring, biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane. Because Rose died almost 100 years after Laura was born, the 700+ page tome covered a century of American history

Sunday was a day of sports watching. I had spent a lot of the night watching tennis, and continued when I finally dragged myself out of bed in the morning. After opening the cemetery, I watched The Spurs win an exciting match. And then, of course there were the NFL championship games. They didn’t turn out the way I wanted, but at least the Chiefs did not have the game stolen from them like the Saints did. The officiating was horrible in both games, but the bad calls in the AFC game did not affect the outcome; they did in the NFC. I don’t even know if I’ll watch the Super Bowl (who am I kidding, of course I will) because I don’t care which of these teams wins. And now – I have one more week of tennis.

Weekly Update 1/13/2019

Ah, back to normal! Back to boring.

It’s really great to be back home and watching football games from my recliner on my own tv. The college championship game was not exciting. Luckily, I was doing my BC tour Sunday afternoon, so I didn’t have to watch the New England game. There are only three more football games this season. At least I’ll have the Australian Open to watch, so I won’t be completely without sports.

I’m back to walking, but it’s been brisk again. I went mostly to the Y, but also walked at Daffin Park one morning. I met Kay Forsyth Park Saturday because neither of us made it to The 90 on Friday. They are still having the Farmer’s Market there, but my resistance to fresh fruits and vegies is always high, and I walked away without buying anything.

I was invited to Dave and John’s condo for a wonderful meal on Friday. They are wonderful neighbors, great cooks and their condo is lovely. Several other people who live here were also invited, so it was a good chance for me to share wedding photos and stories.

Weekly Update 1/8/2019

This blog is not on schedule, but I’ve not been near my computer for a few days. And everyone knows why.

But a few things before I even start with The Wedding.

New Year’s Eve was quiet, and that’s how I like it. Of course I was up at midnight; I’m always up at midnight. But turning an old year into a new year no longer has the possibilities that it did when I was younger. So I watched some tv, and ate the wonderful hoppin’ john and greens that June made for me.

New Year’s Day, I was expecting that Rachel B (not Rachel F, I have two wonderful Rachels who call me Grannie) and her boyfriend would be stopping as they drove from Disney back to Rochester. They toured around Savannah on their own for a while, and then came to stay the night with me. Just like me, they had to be in Rochester for The Wedding, so they left early the next day. It was a nice chance for me to meet Adam and the get caught up with Rachel.

Thursday, my flights were delayed. Marcia and Andy expected to pick me up at the ROC airport at 2:30, and I got there about five hours late. They did not wait at the airport all that time, but they did have more wait than was appropriate. We went back to their house, and I enjoyed the company of these great friends. I spent the night with them and they drove me to Ishy’s house after a nice lunch.

Friday night, I had plans to meet former co-workers for a fish fry. One thing I miss about Savannah is the great Friday Night Fish Fries that I used to eat weekly. Shrimp and grits are a nice substitute, but sometimes a nice beer battered piece of haddock is something I crave. So I met with them and we visited for a long time. Things at City Hall have only gotten worse. Kathy is the only one of us who has not retired, so she had stories to share. When I got back to Ishy’s house, Allen had arrived, and it was good to be together with them.

And then it was Saturday, and time for The Wedding. This has been coming for almost two years, and always seemed to far into the future. And all of a sudden, it was here. I’ll add a lot of photos, so you can see how lovely Sarah looked.

Ishy, Allen & me, ready for an outdoor wedding

Sarah chose the weekend of the Wild Card Playoffs for her wedding day. So, what can be done? As soon as we could, we changed our clothes and went to a bar to watch the first game. There were maybe 12 people in this bar, and I knew 2 of them! What are the chances?

The next day, we drove to Waterloo, NY (home of Memorial Day, an interesting aside) which is half way between Rochester and Syracuse, where the Flynns live. I needed to see them, since I was so close and I didn’t get to see them at the wedding. We met at a nice diner, which was grand. The food was wonderful, and the service was great, they did not rush us and our waitress even came out to offer to take pictures of us all!

And then it was over. The long awaited wedding is now in the past, no longer in the future. I've known since the day Sarah was born that this day was coming, but it came too fast. I wish the bride and groom much happiness. And I’m very happy to be back home in Savannah.
