Weekly Update 10/29/2017

Again I did almost nothing all week except the usual.  So there's nothing to report.

When I was at The 90 on Friday, Martha and Brittany, the bartenders, were dressed for Halloween.

Allen was at The Ralph (I don't think that's the name of the stadium in Buffalo, but it's the name I know) watching the game.  It was raining and cold.  I was at Coach's watching the game.  It was sunny and nice.  But I was a little worried about the outcome.  I shouldn't have been.

Weekly Update 10/22/2017

My friend Sylvia's husband Charles was sworn in as a judge in Savannah on Wednesday.  I drove Sylvia to his office for the ceremony, and then became the "official" photographer for the rite. It was a pleasure to be there.

A friend here at MP celebrated her 51st birthday (why can I not get too excited about this?) and also passed her real estate license and is now going to be working for Century 21.  So there was a party to fete her on Thursday.  Good work, Bobbi!

Friday night, after DH and The 90, Kay and I (and several other people we know) went to the Davenport House presentation of Lafayette in Savannah.  Kay and I both know most of the people involved in the production, so that was fun.  It was interesting and informative, and a special treat for me to see DH after dark.

Saturday evening, I was invited to a Halloween Party at Donna and Steve's condo at the Merritt.  They used to be neighbors at MP, but moved to the other condo development nearby.  It was the first chance I'd had to see their new condo, and it was very nice.  There were a few people from MP, but mostly new friends they've made.  I was dressed in my Buffalo Bills fan costume.

Did anyone see any of the fabulous meteor shower? I went out at 1 am and 5 am on October 21, and it was a clear night.  I didn't see any shooting stars.  What was all the hype about?

A couple of interesting observations about the Sunday football:  Before I went to Coach's to watch the Bills, I watched the Tottenham Hotspurs of the Premiere League on tv at home. I'm beginning to understand and enjoy soccer a little bit more.  And then I watched American football.  With the soccer, the action is continuous with just a half time break.  With any NFL game, they cut for commercials every few minutes throughout the game.  That gets old really fast.  And also, as the Bills lined up for Hauschka to kick the game-winning field goal, there were shouts in the bar of "wide right".  Don't people ever get tired of remembering that??

Weekly Update 10/15/2017

I began this week by getting up at 6  am on Monday.  I only do this once a year, on the anniversary of the Battle of Savannah, October 9.  Today was the day.  The people who attend walk through the battle grounds while costumed soldiers explain what was happening in 1779.  It was  disaster for the Revolutionary army, due to poor leadership, miscommunication, and bad timing.  Now, it's attended mostly by politicians and staff at the Savannah History Museum. And me.

On my way back to the condo (to go back to bed), I stopped at Daffin Park to walk.  Daffin Park is on Victory Drive, which is a wide boulevard, with azaleas and memorial palm trees all along the median.  Imagine how awful it would look with glow-in-the-dark skeletons lining this lovely roadway!

While I'm on the subject of Halloween decorations, guess who's in the outhouse?

One of the things on my summer bucket list (mid-October, and I'm still working at this list) was the King-Tisdell cottage, a house museum in Savannah. It was owned by a black business owner in the early 20th century. I've been meaning to go there for a long time, and Wednesday I had a chance to do that.  I was the only "tourist" there that afternoon, so it was especially interesting for me, as I could ask questions and also show off a little bit about how much I know of Savannah history.

Again this week, I spent too much time at Bonaventure.  I did a private tour for a garden club (amazing, since I know very little about plants and generally kill any that are in my care), and impromptu tours on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Good thing there was no Bills game on Sunday, or I would not have been able to offer to guide some technology-challenged ladies, who couldn't load the tour app (and I'm also challenged, and couldn't help them load it) to have a personal tour.

A good friend I haven't seen in a while retired last week.  A few of us got together to go out to dinner to celebrate this milestone for Beth.  It was a great opportunity to see some ladies I haven't seen a long time, and I hope this will be something we can continue to do more frequently.

Friday the 13th wasn't bad for me (it never is, but I still get nervous when I see it on my calendar).  It wasn't lucky for Clemson, however.  Go Orange!

Weekly Update 10/8/2017

This has been a week in hell. Nothing has gone right. All week.

I have fought with so many people and organizations.   I've battled with the condo management (that's on-going), Comcast (those idiots have not protected my privacy rights, and don't care), and even the police (briefly - a silly story).

The only thing I did that was constructive all week was to buy a new vacuum cleaner.  Not to let me even enjoy that, I was cleaning and I broke one of my two Lefton figurines. These were given to me and my brother from our grandmother decades ago, just before she died.  She's been dead for over 60 years; Tom's been dead for 40 years.  These are not valuable antiques, but they mean the world to me.  And I broke one.  Well, lesson learned - I won't be cleaning any more.

I also had a bottle of Skin So Soft, which I take with me on my tours at BC because it can be used as an insect repellent, leak all over the passenger seat in my car.  That's oily and will leave a big stain.

And the Bills lost a game they should have won.

That's pretty much how the whole week went.

And there was a full moon and incredibly high tides.  So at least I have a picture of that.

Weekly Update 10/1/2017

I'm continuing to give my best efforts to a regular walking routine, but it's difficult.  When I had a meeting at DH on Monday, I parked at Forsyth Park, about a mile from DH, and walked (there are no parking meters there, so it was win-win - I did some walking and didn't pay to park).  I also walked at BC after I unlocked the Visitor Center on Saturday morning.  Can I stop this now? Please?

I tried to watch the Ken Burns' Vietnam documentary, but I found it was too upsetting for me.  The video footage of young men dying in battle, and the interviews with veterans who cry when remembering what they went through - it's all too raw for me.  I'm sure it's a great show, but I just couldn't do it.

On Wednesday, I invited Connie, Helen and Jane to come over and see some of my pictures of the trip to UK.  Connie and Jim plan to go there in December this year, so she was anxious to hear some of my stories.  I made an English tea, with little sandwiches and I baked scones. I cheated on the sandwiches a little, and just used Publix egg salad and turkey salad for filling, but I made the scones from scratch. I even cleaned the condo a little bit.

The new season at SCT is underway, and I was at the performance of Junie B Jones, The Musical on Saturday afternoon.  It was great.  As Always.

I wasn't sure about going to coach's again this Sunday.  Although I thought the same last week, and the Bills were able to get past Denver, I was sure that the Falcons would have their way with us in Atlanta. But, thanks to a great Defense, a couple of long field goals, and some disastrous injuries on the Falcons team, the Bills were able to hang on for a great win.  I was among only a few Buffalo fans, but I didn't feel as if I was watching alone because I was texting with Allen, Dave and Lisa through the game - it was almost like having them with me!  I stayed all the way until the end.  I often leave before the game is over, not wanting to jinx anything, but it was so exciting, I needed to stay this time.  And to make the victory even sweeter, the Patriots lost!
