Weekly Update 7/31/2022

Another boring week. Not much going on. I can’t even swim in the pool as much as I’d like because there always seems to be someone else there! And I have to share! Whose pool is this anyway?

Got stuck at this train on Habersham Street one day this week. What exactly is a Savannah and Old Fort Railroad? I thought they were all CSX? At Least this wasn’t too long, like the trains going to the port.

Sunday, Kay and I went to the Davenport House Garden Party. It was really nice to see so many people that I know. Because the museum has been closed for so long, I haven’t had a chance to talk to many of my friends there. I think they’ll be opening up in mid-August, and I’m ready to get back to it!

Adrian has taken his first steps.  How can he be growing so quickly?

Weekly Update 7/24/2022

Four times this week, I went out to lunch. The Wednesday happy hour group met to celebrate July birthdays on Tuesday. My Green Square group met on Thursday to fete Denise’s birthday. John and Mike, from MP met me on Friday, just to keep in touch. And I went out with Kay on Saturday to a nice Mexican restaurant nearby. Two of those lunches were at a place called J Thomas. It is in a strip mall not far from where I used to live at the condos, but it has opened since I’ve moved. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, and have wanted to try it, and I got there twice this week. It was very good. I had a reuben sandwich one time and the full pot roast dinner the other time. Both were excellent, and the desserts were grand!

Tuesday, after I met for lunch, I went to City Hall. I parked where I didn’t have to pay, walked up to City Hall, and stopped at the Little Library near the police station to drop off some books that have been in the trunk of my car for months. There were no books inside the box, so when I added the few I had, it looked a little more friendly. I usually go there in the morning, but because I was later, the drive home was unbelievable! I knew it would be bad, so instead of going along the port as I normally do, I went home on Route 80. What should have taken about 50 minutes, took me two hours. And it wasn’t truck traffic; it was commuter traffic -people driving back from jobs in the city out to the ‘burbs. It made me very glad that I am retired.

Thursday, since I was close to Bonaventure, I went to the cemetery to put some summer flowers at the graves of John and Dessie. The flags and red, white and blue carnations that were there looked pretty bad, so I’m glad I did that.

I really didn’t do much else this week except go out to lunch. I did try to spend as much time as I could at the pool, and I read quite a bit. It cools down in the afternoon, and the thunderstorms roll in, so I’ve been out on my porch with my book for several afternoons this week.

I had lovely videos of Adrian again this week, and I also got a copy of the ultrasound of Baby #2. No idea if it’s a brother or sister for Adrian, but Sarah says that doesn’t matter. And it doesn't. Adrian had a visit to Build A Bear Workshop, too. I think he got a birthday bear. Those pictures brought back fond memories of me spending hundreds of dollars in that store with all the girls in past times.

Weekly Update 7/17/2022

Well, I finally did it! I hired someone to come clean my apartment. This has been a long time coming. I can do most of the things that need to be accomplished in order for me to be able to live here: clean the bathroom and kitchen, launder my clothes, eat. But I just can’t (and more important, don’t want to) mop my floors, scrub my bathroom tiles, polish my appliances, dust my ceiling fans, vacuum my baseboards. I found a nice lady on the nextdoor app, and she came last Monday. She was here for just over two hours, and did a thorough cleaning. She’s going to come once a month. She’s not cheap, but I just don’t want to do this any more. So, it’s worth it to me.

It was an easy week. There was no City Hall because the a/c broke. I was given the option to come in or not, so I stayed home. There was no DH because they are still filming there. There was no Green Square because Denise worked, Jane had a doctor appointment, and Helen was taking her cat to the vet. My usual scheduled events were all canceled. I was able to go to the pool more, and I was there almost every day. I still enjoy swimming. A couple of times, I had to share the pool with others, but that’s when I get my noodle and just do some aerobic exercises that I remember from many years ago at the Y. At least I’m moving a little.

The one thing I did have on my calendar, a visit to Beltone for a check up, I forgot. I was supposed to go Wednesday morning, and it just slipped my mind. I called and made an other appointment for Thursday. This was at the new center located next to the Publix on Pooler Parkway, so it’s very convenient. I told them I am happy with the new hearing aids, and they gave me a few tips that I’ can probably use to make hearing better.

When I knew that the cost of stamps was going to increase, I wanted to buy forever stamps to have handy. I put it off and put it off until the last minute, and then I didn’t feel like driving to the post office to buy them. I searched online and found a site that sells forever stamps at half price, so I got 100 stamps for $27.50. Not only was a glad to have a bargain, but I hate the Post Office so much, I’m happy not to give them more money than I have to. But, it you don’t get cards and notices from me, it’s because these stamps are bogus. I hope they’re not.

I had a google meet with Adrian on Saturday. I read him two books before he got bored. He is so adorable. And, he’s so close to taking his first steps.

Weekly Update 7/10/2022

Feeling as unpatriotic as I do, I did nothing for the 4th of July. I thought my neighbors might have a picnic, but I didn’t hear anything about it. I was not disappointed. So, I watched a lot of tennis, read some of my book, and watched 1776. I love that movie, and I try to watch is every Independence Day.

On Tuesday, I finished the project at City Hall that I’ve been working of for several months. I was reading through old magazines and clipping anything that had to do with Savannah. I found an advertisement for the Mercer Wilder House in a 1967 publication. It was asking $55,000. Jim Williams got himself a bargain. A new project will begin this week.

When I went to meet my friends at Green Square, I was disappointed. Helen wasn’t feeling well, Jane was waiting for her son to arrive for a visit, and Denise was at work. I went downtown anyway. I wanted to see what was happening at DH. Columbia Square was full of tents and crates, set up as a Civil War encampment. I went into DH to say hello to Jamie, Jeff and Sheena, and they all encouraged me to go to the house to see what was going on. It’s a movie set! The film people had brought in furniture and props, and the DH furniture was all piled in together in other rooms. The dining room on the living level was full of all the furniture from the first floor and the yellow bedroom on the second floor had all the upstairs furniture. The wallpaper was not changed, but a couple of rooms were repainted, and that looks really strange.  There's also a lot of draperies that look out of place to me.  I chatted for a few minutes with the set director. He told me a little about the plans for the movie, Manhunt, that will be on Apple TV, but he’s not sure just when. I suggested to him that the best place to eat is Crystal Beer Parlor. He’d already heard that, and had eaten there the day before.

I did get to the pool a couple of times this week, in between watching the tennis. But, it’s too hot to walk. It’s actually not comfortable to swim as the water is so warm, it’s like being in a bathtub.

Adrian was out of town, visiting Jack’s family for a week, so the new photos were sparse. They did take him to the VanGogh experience, a traveling exhibition that was nearby, and sent the most adorable photo of him in the bedroom at Arles. He’s the best!

Weekly Update 7/3/2022

Wimbledon Wimbledon Wimbledon – all week. And not much else.

I did get to City Hall on Tuesday, and to Green Square on Thursday. But there was no DH on Wednesday. Since I don’t have a lot to write, I thought I’d post an article that I found in an old magazine while I was at City Hall. It was from Colonial Homes Magazine, May 1981. DH has changed a lot since then! The white marble mantle that is shown in the drawing room is now in the office, and that’s where it originally was located. The dining room in the article is the office, and there isn’t a photo of the family dining room that we have now. There is currently a fake cloth cover in the hallway, not the hardwood floor. And there are no draperies today, only blinds. And a huge difference is that there was no wallpaper in the 1981 article. The renovations that were done in 2000 – 2001 tried to make the house more authentic to what the Davenports would have been familiar with, and much that is shown in the magazine is not from the 1820s. Since I’ve only seen it since the restoration, the old photos looked very strange to me.

I’ve begun to read The 1619 Project. It is like preaching to the choir, but I find it interesting. I also ordered several books from Thriftbooks, my go-to online bookstore. One is for a book future book club meetings, and the others are just because I want to read them.

I wanted to pick blueberries this week. They are only available for u pick on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It rained all day Friday, and I watched too much morning tennis to get to the farm early Saturday. By then the berries had been pretty much cleaned out. And I was terrified that I might see a snake. There has been a lot of mention about copperheads and other venomous snakes that are around this time of year. I was looking at my feet as much as I was looking for plump berries. I didn’t get too many, but I’ve got some in the freezer now. Perhaps my u pick berries days are behind me, and I’ll have to be content with ones from California that for sale in Publix.

I finally got to see Kay again. Between her family visiting last weekend, and my sickness that weekend before, it’s been a long time since we last got together.

But the biggest news: Adrian is going to be a Big Brother in February 2023. They are thrilled, and I’m happy for them. (There’s also an adorable video of him trying to catch a toad)
