Weekly Update 8/30/2015

I began the week with a nice dinner out with Anne and Kay. We met at Treylor Park in downtown Savannah. I was the only one of the three of us who had been there before, but we all agreed it was good. And, of course, the best thing was the company. After we ate, we walked to a new roof-top bar overlooking the Savannah River. It's too bad it rained, but we had a few minutes to sit outside before it really started to some down.

Only a few short weeks until my snowbird friends begin to return to Savannah. So, it occurred to me that when Suzy gets back, I'll need to return the sewing machine that I'd borrowed for the summer. I had in the back of my mind for months the idea for a Halloween costume this year, and decided that I'd better get at it if I wanted to have it made before I have to give up the sewing machine. So, that's what I worked on for several afternoons this week. It didn't turn out quite as well as I'd hoped, but hey, I'll only wear it once, so who cares? Or I may not wear it at all. I know that Dave has a “project” planned for Halloween, like the Easter craft we did last spring. I hope it includes costumes, not carving. Not unlike the probability that the fire department may have to be called when I go into my kitchen to bake, I fear that anything involved with me, giant gourds, and a sharp knives may have to involve paramedics.

Audrey has continued to grow and grow. I've pruned her back, cut off whole limbs, tried all sorts of ways to keep her manageable. It's not working. I would like to be able to sit in my sunroom and read by the big windows; I'd like to be able to open my blinds without having to push Audrey out of the way and fight my way through a jungle just to get to them! So, I decided something must be done. I toyed with the idea of dismembering her and taking her to the dumpster piece by piece, but that sounded a little barbaric. For now, I simply moved her to the guest bedroom. I'll try that for a while, but she still may end up as garbage.

On Wednesday, I was happily lounging at the pool, reading my book. Then I heard what appeared to be an alarm going off. Since my hearing isn't that great, I actually didn't pay too much attention, and couldn't even tell if it was coming from inside MP or maybe from a security system at the nearby shops. But when I saw Anthony running to deactivate the front gate mechanisms, I figured it was sometning in one of the buildings. A week ago, Building 9 had some water damage because of a sprinkler system that had been set off when welders were working on an a/c unit. And that's apparently what happened again, this week in Building 2. (I'm in Building 5, so nothing near me – yet). There were four firetrucks and and lots of emergency personnel around, but no one was hurt, luckily, with only property damage. Easy for me to say - ONLY property damage. I'm told that the trucks needed to make a return appearance later that same day, because of a faulty alarm. One thing after another here.

Saturday night, I went to the annual fund raiser for Old Fort Jackson. I've always loved this event. It includes a silent auction and a wonderful low country broil meal. I bid on three items - a handcrafted necklace that would have matched the shirt I was wearing perfectly, a paint and wine tasting party for 4, and an evening at 700 Drayton at the chef's cooking school which would have been valid for a year. I've heard wonderful things about this, and thought that if Allen were to come within the next year, it might be something a little different for us to do. On the other hand, that might be like asking me to spend a fun evening filling out payment vouchers or calculating time banks, which is what I had to do for my job. I guess it's a good thing that I was outbid for all of the things I signed for. The food at the fort was wonderful!

While it looked for a short time as if a major hurricane might be headed out way, it turned out to be much ado about nothing. We've had a lot of rain, and a lot more is forecast for next week. But candles and bottles of water are still safely stored at the back of the cupboard.

How about those Buffalo Bills?

  2. no photo of the Halloween outfit? Inquiring minds want to know. I loved the story about Audrey and about your "talent" with Halloween carving! You have quite a lot of talent for clever writing!
