Weekly Update 8/9/2015

My smart phone was a two-year contract. I'd had the Samsung Galaxy Phone for 2 years and 1 day. And I took it to the Verizon Store and traded for an iPhone. I'd waited so long. So far, I've liked it. I don't know how that will change when I find out what data I'm using, or get my first bill. And I had a little trouble getting the hotspot to connect to the internet, but if you're reading this, I figured it out. But it's been a pleasure so far.

This week, I promised myself that I would get back into my routine. I'd given myself a week to savor just being home and not doing anything, but the pool beckoned. I headed out Monday morning, not realizing that it was raining, so I retreated right back to my chair. It was the kind of drizzling rain that lasted all day, so I didn't try again. Tuesday and the rest of the week, however, the weather was more typical - wonderfully hot and sunny. I was able to swim four times. Ahhh...

Monday was book club. The group seems to be getting smaller and smaller, but it's a good group and I like to listen what the others think about the books they read. I had read a new biography about Ty Cobb (the Georgia Peach), but didn't really like it. Now, I'm happily reading a Ken Follett novel, but not for book club; just because I want to.

I also got back into the routine a little by going to a class about 50's sitcoms at the Learning Center, and I went to a lecture at the Shops of the Sea Museum about the slave ship the Antelope. I'd heard this speaker before, and I think he's easy to listen to, he speaks clearly and loudly (a real plus for those of us who can't hear well be refuse to spend money on hearing aids that don't help), and he has an enthusiasm for his topic that is contagious. It was great.

Friday, I had been invited to join some others on a cruise on the Savannah River. The event was hosted by the owners of 17 Hundred 90, and it was held on the First Friday, which is when Savannahians celebrate by having a street party on River street with vendors, music and fireworks. It was great to be on a boat, with a buffet, a bar, and friends to enjoy watching the people on the shore and the fireworks.

It was an opportunity for me to experiment a little, and see what the camera on the new iPhone could do. I won't be trading my little point-and-shoot camera, as I think it takes much better photos, by far.

My friends, Charles and Sylvia, have been very generous to me, inviting me to their lovely home several times for parties - birthdays, Halloween - and dinner - New Years' Day, Passover, football games. Because Sylvia can't navigate the stairs to get into my condo (and because I don't cook) I haven't been able to reciprocate. Saturday evening this week, we went out to dinner at the Wilmington Island Golf Club, a favorite of theirs. I'd never been before, and it was very nice. I treated, and this was my way to entertain them. It was nice.

Sunday, of course, was tour day at BC. The tours were all smaller than some other times, but that was ok. I didn't have to yell as much, and I could add a few stories that I don't always have time for, because I didn't have to wait at each stop for stragglers to catch up. By the next tour, in September, the NFL season will be in swing, and I'll be anxious to finish up and get to Coach's to watch the game.

Two of my downstairs neighbors were out of town for a few days. Before Mike left, he asked if I would feed the feral cats that live behind Building 5. I reluctantly said I would. He gave me a big bag of cat food and instructions to fill the dish in the evening. I don't like the cats that live here, (I don't much like cats at all) and they've been here ever since I moved in. But I suppose that they are keeping some very nasty critters from coming out of the woods and into the building, so they seem to be the lesser of two evils. Woody generally takes care of them, but left Mike in charge while he's gone, who left me the chore. I was really happy to hand the bag of food back to Mike today.

  1. Thanks for taking care of the kitties Wilma! You are a good neighbor!
I've been reading quite a bit this summer. Enjoying the Outlander series and just finished the 2nd... Dragonfly in Amber. They are a commitment as they are 850-1050 pages but a good read and I love the main characters Jamie (hot!) and Claire. They remind me of Ayla and Jondolar of the Clan of the Cave Bear series. I've enjoyed an Evanovich and read Running with Scissors that I found more dark than funny. I'm really enjoying Just Kids by Patti Smith of her life with artist Robert Mapplethorpe... Set in the turbulent late 60s and 70s in NYC with the artsy crowd. She is a very poetic writer, so I'm enjoying it a lot.
Your boat trip sounds delightful! Say hi to the crew who is in town. We plan to be back after Labor Day... before 9/14. Enjoying the waning days of summer here. It's been a strange summer weatherwise.
    Miss you!
    hugs

  2. I am glad you got in a boat trip. Sounds like fun. I am mostly reading nonfiction about the places we are visiting, although I do have a couple fiction books on my Kindle and whenever Fred is driving us to a new place, I take a Dramamine and read those. I will miss 3 of my book club meetings while we are gone and probably won't bother to read the selections unless they really intrigue me.

Avery begins Kindergarten tomorrow! Katherine says she is very excited - hope she won't drive the teacher crazy. She loves to read, write stories, draw, and act. Her pre K teacher was so good with her; hope the new teacher will like her too.
